Ogun Waterside Monarchs Pledge Support For Kashamu

Ahead of the March 2 governorship election, traditional rulers in Ogun Waterside Local Government Area of Ogun State have pledged their support for the Governorship Candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state, Senator Buruji Kashamu.

They gave the assurance at the weekend when Kashamu led members of his campaign team and party leaders on a consultative visit to the local government area.

Kashamu spoke of his plans to open up the Ogun Waterside and connect it with Lagos State so as to boost its economic potentials since the area is rich in natural resources.

He informed the traditional rulers that he would never tamper with local government allocations, if elected as governor.

This, he reckoned, would guarantee better treatment for the traditional institutions and engender grassroots development.

Responding on behalf of his colleagues, the Chairman of the Ogun Waterside Traditional Rulers-in-Council and the Ojotumoro of Abigi, His Royal Highness, Oba Segun Ogunye, said the Kashamu-for-Governor project was a done deal.

He said it was “payback time” for Kashamu whom, he said, had been using his personal resources to put smile on the faces of the people.

Ogun Waterside, which he described as the “Niger Delta of Ogun State”, had been neglected over the years but expressed the hope that with Kashamu as governor, the area would experience a new lease of life.

Oba Ogunye requested for infrastructural development as well as the setting up of a tertiary institution in Ogun Waterside so as to open up the area.

The seven traditional rulers on hand gave their blessings and prayed for Kashamu’s success at the poll.

The monarchs included the Elefire of Efire, His Royal Highness, Oba Musa Adeniji; the Lemuwa of Ode-Omi, His Royal Highness, Oba Adenuga; the Alarige of Ibiade, His Royal Highness, Oba Bola Raimi; the Oloni of Oni, His Royal Highness, Oba Abdulfatai Odukoya; the Onirokun of Irokun, His Royal Highness, Oba Busari Buhari and the Elero of Itebumanuwa, His Royal Highness, Oba Adetutu Manuwa

Supreme Court Ruling Today: Candidacy Of Tonye Cole, Others Not Imperiled - Rivers APC

The Rivers State Chapter of All Progressive Congress APC) her attention has been drawn to a myriad of reports making the rounds on the social media giving conflicting, and in some cases, outright mischievous narratives misinterpreting and misrepresenting the pronouncement of the Supreme Court today, Friday, February 8, 2019 on the matter between Ibrahim Umar & 22 Ors vs Rivers APC.

In a statement today signed by the party’s spokesman, Senibo Chris Finebone said: “Whereas the APC is reluctant to join issues with anyone when it concerns matters before the court, however, we believe that the general public deserve to be protected from calculated mischief and misinformation especially those dispensed through the social media and rumours. Therefore, it has become highly necessary to re-state what transpired at the Supreme Court.”

It reads: “Today, the apex court ruled that, in line with provisions of the Constitution of the APC, the chapter legal adviser at the time the matter commenced, Mr. Chieme Chinweikpe, rightly represented the party directly or through legal appointees of his instead of Mr. Lateef Fagbemi, SAN who was seconded by the legal department of national headquarters of APC. This means that the judgment given by Justice Chiwendu Nworgu was a consent judgment following thereto.

“Irrespective of how we feel about the pronouncement, the Rivers State Chapter of APC has to accept that decision having come from the highest court of the land.

“However, we make haste to state that the decision on legal representation was the only matter the Supreme Court made pronouncement on today. We expect the apex court to rule on the all-important issue of jurisdiction of whether the State High Court of Justice Chiwendu Nworgu was right to delve into what we believe was an internal affairs of the APC with regards to primaries.

“We urge the mainstream media and innocent members of the public to resist the lure of mischievous individuals who are inundating the social media and entire cyberspace with jaundiced versions of today’s Supreme Court ruling or churning out outright fake news with a view to deceiving the public, deluding themselves with short-lived comfort and feathering their nests from their paymasters.

“We are convinced that no harm has been done to the candidacy of our governorship candidate, Pastor Tonye Cole and the others. We believe that, by the grace of God, we shall triumph and ultimately be on the ballot for the 2019 elections.

“We call on the teeming supporters of APC in Rivers State to remain calm as it will surely end in praise. All candidates of APC in Rivers State will be on the ballot and go ahead to win come February 16 and March 2, 2019.”

In a related development, the Rivers State APC  Governorship aspirant,  Tonye Cole said his attention has also been drawn to reports which suggest that Ibrahim Umar & 22 others have secured a final determination at the Supreme Court.

In a press release by the Spokesman of Cole/Giadom Campaign Organisation, Ogbonna Nwuke,  he said that the facts available to the campaign organisation is that the only issue determined today, Friday, 8th February, 2019 was that of legal representation, which had been in contention.

"Based on the various conflicting headlines being carried, it is critical to state that there are other pending matters, including the substantive appeal, which is yet to be determined by the Supreme Court, Nwuke said.

The statement further read, “Our faith in the judiciary remains unshaken. We wish to urge our numerous supporters not to panic, following the deliberate misrepresentation of facts on the social media and elsewhere regarding the outcome of today’s judgement.

"We shall surely be triumphant in the end, the statement concluded”

Ebonyi Guber 2019: Monica Concurs With Buhari, Others

….Says Gov Umahi is the best and has no rival in Ebonyi State
….Condemns plot by INEC to allocate unmerited 200,000 votes to the APC candidate

Monica Ada Chidinma Eze the Founder and President of David Umahi Nweze Akuburoah Ebonyi Transformation Agenda (DUNAETA), a Non Governmental Organisation (NGO) has described as heartwarming the approval and support by great political leaders both from within and outside Nigeria most importantly the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, President Muhammadu Buhari, PDP Presidential Standard Bearer, Alh Atiku Abubakar and Chief Peter Obi the Vice Presidential candidate of PDP on the reelection bid of Apostle Dave Nweze Umahi the indefatigable and revolutionary Governor of Ebonyi State.

She stated that if the approvals and comments by these great political leaders across political divides are anything to go by, one would have advise Governor Umahi to stop further campaigns and wait to be sworn in formally come 29th May 2019, but being the man of the people who loves interacting with his people he will not give in or stop campaigning because of all these approvals base on his giant strides in the State.

Monica noted that President Buhari who is of the All Progressives Congress (APC) while on a State visit to the State to commission some of the key projects including some gigantic flyovers, the 14.5 Kilometer Abakaliki-Afikpo Road, a federal road reconstructed by the state government; two overhead bridges, Akanu Ibiam and Sen offiah Nwali flyover and laying the foundations for a new tunnel named after him in the state capital which will be ready for commissioning by Mr President before May  2019 described Governor Umahi as a great leader and Light to other Governors in Nigeria.  Mr. President reaffirmed his stand that Governor Umahi is a great leader during the presidential rally in Ebonyi State.

On the other hand, Atiku Abubakar, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Presidential Candidate in the forthcoming elections during the party’s presidential rally in Abakaliki commended Engr., David Umahi for his infrastructural strides, especially in road construction while Mr. Peter Obi the running mate to the PDP presidential candidate promised that for PDP to develop Nigeria, "Our government will replicate the infrastructural and related strides of your Governor at the national level.

Lady Eze reiterated that for PDP promise to copy and reproduce the works of Governor Umahi at the centre if the party forms the next government come May 2019 shows why Governor Umahi is a recipient of the great Zik's Leadership award and why Governor Ikepazu of Abia State maintained that Governor Umahi is the wisest Governor in Nigeria.

Monica further reported that Governor Umahi reassured Atiku Abubakar and entire good people of Ebonyi state that the State remains the mainstay of the PDP in the country, and would massively vote for Mr Atiku Abubakar and other candidates of the party in the general elections. According to the Governor, "I warn mischief makers who doubt the authenticity of the State as the headquarters of the party in Nigeria to desist from such. They should leave us alone as this is the highest mobilization of party supporters in the nation ever since, and we are intact for the party.’’

These approvals justifies the great feats and impacts that the administration of Governor Umahi have impacted in the lives of people of Ebonyi State

The DUNAETA President who is better known as Ada Ebonyi wonders how Senator Sunny Ogbuoji the sleeping APC gubernatorial candidate who has abandoned embarking on campaigns or engage in any rally to be taken seriously as gubernatorial candidate in the State.

Monica who doubles as the Technical Assistant (TA) on Media to Governor Umahi cautioned that the rumour going on in the State that the APC is plotting with INEC to allocate over 200,000 to them immediately the election commences in the State should be nipped in the bud before it causes unprovoked crisis in the State because we will neither condone such unholy act of allocating votes to a candidate who spent much of his time sleeping to the determinant of a candidate whose feats are well acknowledged by every visitor to Ebonyi State.

Monica pleads with the security agencies to investigate this wicked plot as any attempt to subvert the will of Ebonyi people will be a call to anarchy.

“Governor Umahi has proved beyond every doubt that he is on a divine mission in Ebonyi State and anybody plotting to truncate God's vision for our dear State will be highly resisted accordingly” Ada Ebonyi said.

She boasted that with the 140 Ebonyi traditional rulers that endorsed Umahi for 2019 and the extraordinary feats he has achieved his March 2nd 2019 reelection bid is assured and guaranted not matter the odds

“Let me reiterate that those who are plotting to plunge our dear State into crisis to note that Ebonyi State is known for peace. Ebonyi is known for progress. Election is not all about fighting and killing or oppressing people anyhow. So those who goes about destroying and burning the billboards of the Governor and PDP candidates to desist from such acts as it will not make any difference in this election as the imprints of Governor Umahi is well rooted in the hearts of every Ebonyians”  Monica declared.

Let me counsel every Ebonyian to feel free to cast their votes as all necessary efforts will be made to protect the sanctity of the ballot in the State.

PMB 2019 Presidential Rally In Rivers State: A Bird-eye View Of The Determinant Factors By An Insider

I can still vividly remember how Amaechi predicted Buhari’s emergence as President during the early days of APC and long before the issue of who would fly the party’s flag came up. When on 9th September, 2013, my appointment as the National Publicity Secretary of the defunct New Peoples Democratic Party was announced to Nigerians, the only brief I received was the 30-minute encounter I had with the then Governor Amaechi.. During that encounter, he kept repeating that whenever Gen Buhari (rtd) accepts to fly the flag of the emergent mega opposition political party in the country, the unseating of President Jonathan and PDP would become a reality” - Eze

By Eze Chukwuemeka Eze

PREAMBLE
On the 4th of February, 2019, by 11:45pm, while planning to close for the day, Sir Ngo Martyns-Yellowe, one of the key political stalwarts from Rivers State, media guru, author, publisher and a seasoned bureaucrat, called to alert me that President Muhammadu Buhari is billed to visit and address Rivers people on the 11th of February, 2019, and considering my position as the encyclopaedist on issues pertaining to the politics of Niger Delta region of Nigeria, said “I plead with you to put up a treatise on the person of President Muhammadu Buhari and his relationship with the region, particularly as it affects Rivers state and the 2019 general elections. I am very convinced that you are capable and can help at such a short period”. Based on this clarion call by this great mind, below is the outcome of of his suggestion.
Not minding that I am a member of the media committee charged with the responsibility of publicising this epochal visit of Mr. President to Rivers state, I was motivated and energised the more in embarking upon this task after the call from this great son of Rivers State, Sir Ngo Martyns-Yellowe. The visit is aimed at soliciting for the votes of Rivers people and for the President to present most importantly, his scorecard as it affects the State since he assumed office as the President of Nigeria, vis-a-vis the inputs that the State made in his 2015 victory and what he intends to accomplish for the people if re-elected come February 16, 2019. In this treatise, therefore, I will examine the inputs, struggles, sacrifices and the benefits that have accrued to the State and counsel on the need for the State to support the candidature of the President come February, 16th 2019, when Nigerians are expected to vote in a new government at the centre, including candidates for the National Assembly.
This treatise will also critically examine how Rivers State produced a genius of a son; Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, who marshalled an opposition political party to defeat a very powerful ruling political party that, prided itself as the largest party in Africa. That the involvement of Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi was all that was required in turning this giant of Nigerian politics (Buhari) into a winning candidate, after three failed attempts will also be examined and discussed.
It is in your hand the reader to judge after going through this if I did justice to the treatise or otherwise, please be the impartial Judge.
PRESIDENT MUHAMMADU BUHARI:
Let me as well highlight that President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, was born on the 17th of December 1942 in Katsina state, Nigeria and raised by his mother following the death of his father, Hardo Adamu, when he was only 4 years old. He got to grow in a very large family considering the fact that he was the twenty-third child to his father.
For his education, the boy Buhari who would grow to rule Nigeria, both as a military man and a civilian, attended the Katsina Model School and later the Government College Katsina (then known as the Katsina Provincial Secondary School).
He began his military journey at the age of 19 when he joined the Nigerian Military Training College (NMTC). The institution was later renamed the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA). He has also gone on to get more education from other institutions, including the Mons Officer Cadet School in Aldershot, England.
He was at various times Military Administrator of the defunct North Eastern state (now Borno and Yobe states) from July 1975 to February 1976; Federal Commissioner of Petroleum and Natural Resources from March 1976 – June 1978; and Head of the Federal Military Government from 1984-85. He later became Chairman of a major interventionist initiative; the Petroleum Trust Fund (PTF). A respected elder statesman and one of the few celebrated saints in Nigeria and the only Nigerian who has contested for president of the country three consecutive times, Buhari won on the fourth attempt. His first shot at the number one position was in 2003, against President Olusegun Obasanjo during his second term. In 2007, he ran against Alhaji Umaru Yar’Adua (now late) and in 2011, he contested against Dr Goodluck Jonathan – all of the Peoples Democratic Party..
MY ENCOUNTER WITH AMAECHI OVER BUHARI
On August 25, 2013, by 6 am, as I was concluding my usual morning prayer session and packing my things to leave Port Harcourt to see my family that left Yola due to the menace of Boko Haram, Rt Hon Chibuike Amaechi, my principal, called me through Mrs. Ibim Sementari, then Rivers State Commissioner for Information and said: “Chief Eze, I have a serious national task for you, but decided to call to find out from you first if your past political background can cause you to renege on the task.” I told him, “Your Excellency, you called me because you know that I have not disappointed you in the past and I don’t intend to in the near future.” So he told me to wait for further instructions.
On September 7, he sent for me and on arrival to the Rivers State Governor’s Lodge at Abuja the nation’s capital, I had a breakfast meeting with him that lasted for about thirty minutes and Amaechi would not allow me enjoy my meal as he continued to sing: “Buhari! Buhari! Buhari!! He's the only solution to the challenges of Nigeria, which is corruption.” As if he was not done with “Buhari!”, “Buhari!”, “Buhari!”, he embarked upon another issue, President Jonathan is a history-maker: he will make history as the first sitting president to lose power. After the breakfast, he asked me to see Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola, who was then Secretary of the newly-formed New PDP that came into being when G7 governors comprising of Babangida Aliyu (Niger), Rabiu Kwankwaso (Kano), Sule Lamido (Jigawa), Aliyu Wamakko (Sokoto), Murtala Nyako (Adamawa), Abdulfatah Ahmed (Kwara) and Rotimi Amaechi (Rivers)  - with former vice-president, Atiku Abubakar ,with some senators and PDP chieftains left the Eagle Square venue of the PDP National Convention to Yar’Adua Centre to have their own convention, where they expressed their reservations about how the party was being run.
I later met with Prince Oyinlola and Alhaji Abubakar Kawu Baraje, the National Secretary and Chairman respectively. And on September 9, 2013, I was announced as the National Publicity Secretary of the New PDP (Npdp). I became confused when I was told that other governors and chieftains of the new party wanted to recruit a very visible personality to man the office of the National Publicity Secretary (NPS) and Amaechi insisted that if the new party needed a person that would create the immediate awareness the party needed at the short time available for the party, the only Nigerian that could achieve that was one Chief Eze Chukwuemeka Eze who is currently in Port Harcourt. His colleagues gave in. When I walked into their midst, it seemed they had expected to see one huge and domineering personality. Their facial expressions gave them away. After about two weeks, they were pleading with me to slow down a bit, asking Amaechi where and how h fished out such a fellow.
Buhari and Amaechi's relationship is ordained by GOD
By the time I put both President Jonathan and the PDP leadership, under my uncle Alhaji Bamanga Tukur (as both of us came from Adamawa) on edge, security organs were all over the place hunting for me and other key actors of this new movement. We became the new bride of political groups in Nigeria, mostly PDP and the then main opposition political party, Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN). In carrying out my task, what was always ringing in my head was: Buhari! Buhari!! Buhari!! Earlier echoed and re-echoed by Amaechi. To pave way for the smooth ascension to the presidency was to work with other leaders to point to Nigerians not only lapses, but the sins of Dr. Jonathan. Within three months, Jonathan knew that he had created another Amaechi, and his days as the President of Nigeria were truly numbered.
The fact remains that when it comes to believing in the abilities of President Buhari, I am yet to see anyone who can rival Amaechi. His love for Buhari and strong belief in his ability to take Nigeria out of the woods is like an obsession.
During that encounter, he kept repeating that whenever Gen Buhari (rtd) accepts to fly the flag of the emergent mega opposition political party in the country, the unseating of President Jonathan and PDP would become a realityI was deeply impressed by his strong belief in Gen. Buhari. It was based on this that I went boldly into the field and with the cooperation of the G7 Governors and other leaders of the New PDP, we were able to dismantle what was the famous and largest political party in Africa, PDP.
AMAECHI’S SECOND TERM AS BUHARI’S PRESIDENTIAL CAMPAIGN ORGANIZATION DIRECTOR GENERAL AND THE OBSTACLES
On January 3, 2018, both local and international media organisations were awash with the news of the appointment of Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi since December, 2017 as the Director General of President Buhari 2019 presidential campaign. That marked the strongest indication that the Nigerian leader would seek re-election in 2019.
Immediately after the announcement of Amaechi’s appointment some APC stakeholders reportedly opposed to the re-appointment of Rotimi Amaechi as President Buhari’s campaign Director General for the 2019 re-election bid moved into action. They argued that as a sitting governor and chairman of the Nigerian Governors’ Forum (NGF) when he held the position of Director-General of the Buhari Campaign Organisation in 2015, Amaechi had enormous power which is not so now that he is just a member of Cabinet.
But they failed to understand that majority of APC governors, ministers and members of the National Assembly were already working with Amaechi to advance the re-election of Mr. President.
One of the reasons Amaechi was being opposed is this rumour that he has a presidential ambition in 2023 and that as Buhari’s campaign manager, he would leverage on the connections.
Although, in the unfolding scenario, Amaechi’s major concern is to prospect for Buhari’s re-election, yes, an encore, yet the possibilities of a repeat performance of the 2015 victory are great and likely to be pervasive, other things being equal, otherwise, the situation may be dicey. Nevertheless, Amaechi is certainly a rampart for effective prosecution of Buhari’s re-election battle.

WHAT ARE THE CHANCES OF PRESIDENT BUHARI IN THE 2019 ELECTION WITH THE GALE OF DEFECTIONS, CONSEQUENCES AND AMAECHI’S PREDICTION?
With high class politicians like Dr. Bukola Saraki, the Senate President, 36 members of the Federal House of Representatives, 12 senators, Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue state, Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed of Kwara state and Governor Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto state having defected to opposition political parties, the question on the lips of every Nigerian is “what chances does President Buhari stand getting re-elected come 2019?”
Chief Obafemi Awolowo, one of the best leaders ever from Nigeria, in 1968, foresaw Dr. Saraki and his co-defectors and stated thus: “For the progressives to be in power, they need the support and collaboration of some conservative. After attaining power the conservative would, on their own, walk away. The progressive would now build a great party that would move the nation forward.”  So what is happening currently in the politics of Nigeria was prophesied about 50 years by the great sage.
Speaking of the chances of President Buhari in the 2019 general elections, Amaechi said, “Nigerians will certainly reject a second looting”. He went further to state, “on those that defected at the House of Representatives and Senate, where do they come from? They come from areas that the President is comfortable. Do you honestly believe that the President will lose election in Sokoto? We are not God, but it’s one of his comfort zones. If you bring the President on a sick bed to Bauchi and Kano, he will win and he has never lost election in Bauchi. But that is a bit arrogant on our side; we should not underestimate them. I am not God. It is only God who can say the APC will win or not. But what is clear is that if you remove the God element, I think we are prepared to coast to victory because Nigerians will certainly reject a second looting. Nigeria can’t survive a second looting. Never!”
CONCLUSION AND ENDORSEMENTS
Based on some of these great feats and concerns towards the development and emancipation of Rivers State by President Buhari the. Apex body of Traditional Rulers in Ikwerre land, the Supreme Council of Ikwerre Traditional Rulers, has unanimously commended and endorsed President Muhammadu Buhari for second term. Ikwerre ethnic nationality is one of the largest ethnic nationalities in the Niger Delta. The endorsement made by the Council through her Chairman, HRM Eze Blessing Wagor, Paramount Ruler of Isiokpo assured President Buhari of their total support, adding that the entire Ikwerre ethnic nationality with over 1.6 million voters, will deliver their votes to him come February, 16th, 2019.
The eminent Traditional Rulers also thanked their son, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, Honourable Minister of Transportation for his key role in the administration of President Buhari.

Highlighting the chances of President Buhari in the Niger Delta region, Prof. Nelson Brambaifa, the newly-appointed Acting Managing Director of the NDDC summarised all that President Muhammadu Buhari has achieved in the Niger Delta region within four years thus: "Only a man who is sincerely concerned of our people’s plight and underdevelopment would go the extra mile of making funds available to inspire our development in infrastructure, welfare, and employment. I must tell Niger Deltans that to demonstrate his commitment to the people of the region; the president has begun the release of over 1.3trilion Naira owed the commission by previous governments’ right from inception. If anything, I must affirm, is the fact that this APC government has shown more commitment for the development of the Niger Delta region in its just about four years in office than, the PDP did for well over 16 years.
Niger Delta people have more than enough reasons to want to vote for President Muhammadu Buhari's continuation in office. We all are aware the Niger Delta Amnesty Programme was billed to end but this PMB-led federal government has extended it and fought off the menacing corruption associated with it.
I recall that Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, a son of the Niger Delta region, in his six years as the president of Nigeria, acknowledged that he failed Rivers state and the Niger Delta region by not embarking on any meaningful project in the region.
"Awards and completion of roads and other people-oriented projects across the Niger Delta leading to the reduction of agitations and insecurity in the region even in its waterways, are clear attestations to the goodwill of the government, which only needs our mandate in votes to continue. It  is on this note that I call on the people from across the nine states constituting the region and indeed all Nigerians to turn out enmass on the 16th of February to mandate President Buhari for a deserving second tenure in office".

Again, Ladi Adebutu Loses As Court Joins Kashamu, Others As Parties In Suit Over Ogun PDP Tickets

...directs PDP to present flags to INEC-approved candidates

The Federal High Court in Abeokuta on Thursday refused the application of a member of the House of Representatives, Honourable Oladipupo Adebutu and others seeking to prevent the Governorship Candidate of the PDP in Ogun State, Senator Buruji Kashamu and others from being joined as  "necessary and interested parties" in a suit pending before the court.

Adebutu and others had filed the suit in which they are asking the court for an order of mandamus to compel the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to publish their names in place of the ones already published by the Commission.

When the matter came up on Thursday, counsel to Kashamu and others, Prince Raphael Ajibola Oluyede, informed the court that his clients who are the candidates whose names had been published by INEC were interested in the matter but were not joined. Hence, they had filed an application as interveners who are willing to be joined.

But, counsel to the Plaintiffs, Mr. Afolabi Fashanu (SAN) objected to the joining of the applicant/interveners.

After much arguments, the court, as presided by the Honourable Justice Abubakar Shittu held that the applicant/interveners were necessary parties that should have been joined. Consequently, the court joined them.

Thereafter, Oluyede informed the court that they had filed an affidavit disclosing that the Plaintiffs and their collaborators were parading themselves as candidates of the party while they were still before the court praying to be declared as candidates.

He added that they plan to hold a rally on Saturday where they will be paraded and flags presented to them as candidates of the party even when INEC has not published their names and for which reason they were before the court.

Oluyede submitted that such an action could lead to a breakdown of law and order and render the case before the court nugatory, if the court does not intervene, adding that the Police have already summoned an emergency security meeting based on the tension being generated by the matter.

He prayed the court to direct the Police not to grant any permission for a rally where flags will be presented to Adebutu and others.

Alternatively, he urged the court to declare that if such a rally must hold, it is only those whose names have been published by INEC as the authentic candidates of the PDP in Ogun State that should be presented as candidates of the party in the state.

Fashanu opposed the prayers, saying they were speculative.

Ruling on the prayers, the court held that where the issue of a potential breakdown of law and order was raised, it has a duty to look at it and take steps to prevent it, adding that the Rule of Law was the basis upon which INEC and the parties conduct their activities.

The court held that where the Rule of Law was jettisoned, it would result in the break down of law and order such as being raised by the applicant.

The court then directed the parties in the matter (i.e. the plaintiffs and the respondents) and their counsel to refrain from being used to foist a fait accompli on the court or cause a breakdown of law and order.

It also directed PDP not to hold anyone out or present anyone as candidates except those who names have been published by INEC pending the hearing and determination of the suits before it, stressing that anything done contrary to the position of the law would be contemptuous and could lead to the breakdown of law and order.

The court adjourned till 14th February, 2019, for hearing of the substantive suit and all pending applications before it.

ASUU Suspends Strike

ASUU President, Biodun Ogunyemi

Ajoke Babareke, Abuja

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and the Federal Government finally came to a compromise on Thursday, resulting in the suspension of the strike embarked upon since November 2018.

All stakeholders came to the decision after a prolonged meeting, which held at the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment, Abuja.

Among those who deliberated over the industrial action,  included the Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige,  permanent secretary Ministry of Education, Sunny Echonu, former ASUU Presidents, Issa Fagge,  Dr Dipo Fashina, Prof Sule Kano among others.

ASUU and government had locked horns over issues relating to staff welfare, including the implementation of the needs assessment programme carried out in all public universities since 2009, the university revitalization fund as well as earned allowances.

During the last meeting between both parties, ASUU was expected to give feedback to the government team after Ngige announced some concessions from the government side.

But after consulting with its NEC, they continued the strike, throwing the university system into further crisis.

While the meeting lasted, leadership of the National Association of Nigerian Students staged a protest calling on the parties to suspend the strike in the interest of the country.

Ngige who read the agreement signed by both parties, expressed optimism that the strike would be suspended.

He said, "This is going to be a conclusive meeting and conciliatory meeting between Federal Government and ASUU.

"This dispute culminated into a strike that started on the 5th of November, 2018”.

According to him the parties unanimously resolved about 8 issues which necessitated the strike, noting that of the NUMPENCO has been resolved as ASUU had collected the license on the 28th January, 2019.

He added that the visitation panel has also been instituted and will commence work on 2nd March with a view to sanitizing the tertiary institutions.

This according to him was in tandem with anti-corruption campaign.

On Earned Allowances, Federal Government said it released the sum of N20 billion to all categories of Staff in the university system but that it was shoring it up with additional N5 billion for payment of Earned Allowances and others.

"The sum of N25 billion is to be released as Revitalisation Fund between April and May 2019 while we resume full implementation of the MoU signed since 2009"

On the reconstitution of the Federal Government negotiation team, he noted that none of the parties can dictate who to represent the interest of either parties.

However, it was agreed that Government's team should reconvene not later than Monday, 9th and conclude its work on or before 29th March, 2019.

To this end, he observed that ASUU has resolved to brief respective organs with the view to suspend the strike.

On his part, Biodun Ogunyemi, ASUU President noted that: "finally we have come up with a document which we have signed on behalf of our members.

"Our members are waiting and you will hear from us later today," he said.

ASUU thereafter proceeded to the premises of the Nigeria Labour Congress, where it announced the suspension of the strike.

In doing so, Ogunyemi said, "Based on the initial proposals from government, the union consultations through its various organs.

"The final level of consultations was the meeting of the National Executive Council which took place 6 to 7th February 2019.

"NEC resolved that following a careful review of the report of engagements with the federal government on proposals for addressing all outstanding in the 2013 MOU and 2017 MoA, NEC resolved that the current strike action by the union should be suspended conditionally with effect from 12.01 am on Friday 8th February, 2019.

"However, should government fail to fulfill its part of the agreement as reflected in the 2019 Memorandum of Action, ASUU shall resume it's suspended strike action as the union deems necessary"
