Defection: Monica Defends Umahi

...... Described those critizing him as enemies of Ndi Igbo

....... Commend Mr President and APC Leadership

As reactions continue to trail the recent defection of the Executive Governor of Ebonyi State, Apostle Dave Umahi, to the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, Technical Adviser to the Governor on Media, Lady Monica Chidinma Ada Eze, has expressed disappointment over comments credited to some media urchins, whose tongues have been wagging on the subject; brandishing opinions which can at best be described as destitute of facts and far from reality.

In a statement made available to media houses, Lady Monica said Gov. Umahi is a stern believer in the principle that "man lives not by bread alone, but by giving a little thought to the lives of others", and his thoughts towards the good people of the South East informed his recent political realignment.

She said it is saddening to read comments imputing fictitious reasons and linking cocktail of lies to the underlining rationale behind Governor Umahi's defection from the crumbling Peoples Democratic Party to the ruling All Progressives Congress.

Describing the thoughts as misguided, Lady Monica said those still harboring the opinion that the PDP was fair to the South East based on some appointments made to the zone during her 16 years reign at the centre, are flamboyantly untutored, ridiculously ignorant and grossly dishonest.

Lady Monica AKA Ada Ebonyi further said only a group of unconscious and conscienceless mortals who have lost all sense of fairness will count political appointments as the fairest share due a particular region in a country of heterogeneous population like Nigeria.

Is it fair enough that after Chief Alex Ekweme, saw to the emergence of the democracy the country currently enjoys and especially, the formation of the PDP, no Igbo man is considered as been worthy to occupy the exalted position of the President of Nigeria? Lady Monica queried.

"I want to make it categorically clear that those who fail to understand the maverick politics of Governor Umahi only view the Igbos as second class citizens of this country who are not worthy to occupy the office of the President of this country and this is nothing but deliberate unfairness and it can longer be tolerated," She said.

The good people of South East collaborated with other zones to secure the Independence of this country and as a result, the Igbos have risen and are no longer ready to play the second fiddle in a country to which they have made much sacrifices.

Umahi, no matter the odds and regardless of what may be the position of anybody, has exposed the sins and wickedness of the PDP against the Igbos and has accordingly, laid the foundation for its total decimation in the South East if it continued with playing pranks with the future and destiny of the zone as regards the Presidency of this country.

Umahi, has by this action resurrected the spirit of the Owelle of Onitsha and one of the leading fathers of this nation, Dr. Nnamdi Azikwe and every patriotic Nigerian is ready to file behind the new Zik in his determined journey to salvage the fortunes and  future of the South East people and Nigerians in general.

Lady Monica Chidinma Ada Eze who also doubles as the Founder and President of David Umahi Nweze Akubaraoha Ebonyi Transformation Agenda (DUNAETA), a grassroots NGO based in Abakaliki, the capital of Ebonyi State, pleads that we should be guided with President Muhammadu Buhari's reaction to Governor Umahi's defection. Mr. President in his reaction described Umahi's defection  "as a bold move driven purely by principle rather than opportunistic motives. I am proud of Governor David Umahi for taking this bold decision in accordance with his conscience and principles rather than any external influence or coercion. Good governance is very important to us in the APC, and I’m glad that the governor has cited this as a major factor in his decision to join us. I urge our citizens to pay less emphasis on identity politics if we want our democracy to make a positive impact on our country. With men like Umahi, I foresee a brighter future for our democracy because the voters will be more motivated by performance records of parties and their candidates. Let me once again; commend the boldness of Governor Umahi for taking this courageous decision in a country where principles are in short supply among many. I know people might call him names, but that is the price men of principles have to pay for acting according to their conscience and convictions"

Monica highlighted further that Dr Umahi never stated that he defected to the APC to struggle for any position. She therefore appealed to those who are using the 2023 Presidency as his reason for defecting to the APC to desist from such calumnious campaign.

For avoidance of doubt, Monica presented the exact words of Governor Umahi on the reasons he defected, "Let me first clarify that I never sought for PDP presidential ticket and so, whosoever is saying that I moved to APC because they refused to zone the ticket to me is being very mischievous because even if PDP promises an individual a presidential ticket; how does it work when over 8000 delegates will be electing the person and such promise cannot happen with ten or twenty people. So, people are being very mischievous about that but there are a lot of prominent people from South East, I don't want to list them but I think the House of Assembly members in their letter to PDP listed very much more qualified personalities from the southeast that can take the Presidential slot of PDP".

"Some people said I was promised this and that - there was no such discussion. APC never promised me any position, they never promised southeast any position. However, I offered this movement as a protest against the injustice being done to southeast by PDP. That since 1998, 1999, the southeast people have supported PDP in all elections. At a time, the five states were all PDP and one of the founding members of PDP is from southeast, the late Vice President, His Excellency, Dr. Alex Ekwueme. And so, it is absurd that from 1998 going to 2023, the southeast will never be considered to run for Presidency under the ticket of PDP, this is absurd. And this is my position and will continue to be my position...."

Lady Monica said Umahi has truly justified why is he the Hero of Nigeria's nascent democracy and called on people of goodwill and lovers of democracy to support the course championed by Gov. Umahi.

Monica commended Governor Mai Mala Buni-led All Progressives Congress (APC) Caretaker/Extraordinary Convention Planning Committee (CECPC) for formally receiving the peoples Governor to the great party and for setting up a very strong and commendable APC Leadership in the State as I am very convinced that Stanley Okoro led State Exco will surely take the State to higher heights.

Mallam Abdullahi said the global COVID-19 pandemic has made the implementation of the policy imperative because it has accelerated the need for innovative ideas more than before.

“Indeed, there will never be a more perfect time to have this policy than now. We are passing through a time of unprecedented crisis. A quadruple crisis started with a health crisis, which led to the economic crisis that led to the humanitarian crisis and the mental health crisis", he submitted.

NNPC Restates Commitment to Growing Nation’s Hydrocarbon Reserves

The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) has reiterated its resolve to grow the nation’s hydrocarbon reserves to 40billion barrels through reinvigorated exploratory activities in the inland frontier basins across the country.

Group Managing Director of the Corporation, Mallam Mele Kyari, stated this while delivering a goodwill message at the opening ceremony of the 38th Annual International Conference and Exhibition of the Nigerian Association of Petroleum Explorationists (NAPE) where he was a Special Guest.

A press release by the Group General Manager, Group Public Affairs Division of NNPC, Dr. Kennie Obateru, quoted Mallam Kyari as revealing that crude oil has already been discovered in the Benue Trough in commercial quantity, with Nigerian Geologists spearheading the efforts.

He noted that the strategy is to aggressively explore for more oil in the frontier basins in order to grow the nation’s reserve base, in line with the Federal Government’s aspiration to hit the 40billion barrels reserve target.

Mallam Kyari said the theme of this year’s conference: “Accelerating     Growth in Nigeria’s Hydrocarbon Reserves: Emerging Concepts, Challenges and Opportunities” fits squarely into NNPC’s key aspiration, which is to grow the nation’s hydrocarbon reserves, reduce unit operating cost of crude oil production to $10 per barrel and improve efficiency across its businesses.

“It is my pleasure to appreciate the good work and resilience of our in-house professionals in the ongoing inland basins exploration activities that culminated in the recent discovery of hydrocarbons in Benue Trough. NNPC is indeed proud that it is NAPE members that are spearheading this effort,” Mallam Kyari stated.

According to him, the NNPC has made significant progress in improving operational efficiency through the adoption of technology and deliberate effort to curtail soaring cost of operations across strategic assets.

“It is instructive to understand that the current market reality cannot support inefficiency and escalated costs of operations. The era of $30/bbl oil no longer exists.

“In today’s Covid-19 defined market, sustaining operations and making progress means that all stakeholders must recognize the need to improve efficiency, reduce costs, eliminate wastages, entrench accountability, act with transparency and embrace technology and innovation to drive performance and value realization across strategic investment portfolios,” he posited.

The NNPC helmsman added that in the face of the energy transition, the Corporation is focused on developing gas infrastructure and deepening domestic gas utilization, stressing that gas is the energy of the future.

The GMD expressed optimism that the Petroleum Industry Bill would be passed next year, noting that the fiscal environment proposed would attract more investment into the Oil and Gas Industry.

He assured NAPE and all other industry operators of sustained collaboration from NNPC, saying that the strategy of synergy was required in order to drive down operating cost and survive the emerging challenges in the industry.

Block-Chain Technology : A Game Changer For The Maritme Sector- Kashifu Abdullahi

Due to the unwavering determination of the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) to holistically implement the National Digital Economy Policy and Strategy, it has said it will assist in the digital technical transformation of the maritime sector. The agency is optimistic that the usage of Block-Chain technology, Artificial Intelligence and Robotics will positively transform the activities of the sector.

The Director General/CEO, NITDA, Mallam Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi stated that with Information Technology(IT) deployment in the maritime sector, there will be efficiency and more revenue generation. He mentioned that Block-Chain technology can be used for tracking and tracing, trade tracing, supply chain, training and many more.

He argued that the infusion of Artificial Intelligence and Robotics in the ports will bring about little or no human efforts with great result.

Mallam Kashifu made this remark during a courtesy visit by members of the Nigeria Shippers’ Council led by its Executive Secretary, Hassan Bello, to NITDA's corporate headquarters in Abuja.

Bello said the purpose of the visit is to seek technical assistance to ensure that the maritime sector, especially the ports in Nigeria, are fully digitalised for efficiency so as to key into the pursuit of a Digital Nigeria.

Mallam Abdullahi remarked that transformation in the maritime sector is beyond technology alone, it has to cut across the people, the process and then the technology”.

The NITDA boss argued that for the NSC to get the best possible outcome, the council needs to look at its business architecture to identify the gaps in other to know where they are currently and where they want to be. The process flow and head hunt is required in other to look for people with the prerequisite skills to help get to where they want to be.

He said government has set in motion several mechanisms to monitor the selection process of VCs with a view to taking appropriate measures to ensure that the processes are conducted in open, fair and transparent manner and that all violators are properly sanctioned.

“Pro-Chancellors, in their dual role as chairpersons of governing councils and chairpersons of the five person selection committee for the appointment of Vice-Chancellors, must be prepared to bear full responsibility for the management or mismanagement of the process. It is our hope the University of Ibadan,   as Nigeria’s premier university, will live up to its billing in this respect.

While stating that government has strengthened institutions such the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, and the Independent Corrupt Practices and other related Offences Commission, ICPC, in the fight against corruption, the president said it is not useful to talk of adequate funding of education if universities are mired in crisis, confusion, fraud and lack of institutional vision.

“I am glad to say that these organisations are working relentlessly to tackle corruption in all its ramifications and to promote the well-being of this nation. It is our collective responsibility to work together and stamp out corruption from our society.  Government is determined to continue to fight corruption at all levels, including in our tertiary institutions.

Buhari assured the university community that the federal government will continue to meet its obligations to universities and the education sector, while noting that government is not unmindful of the special role of the nation’s universities in the upliftment of the socio-economic wellbeing of citizens.

“I wish to assure all stakeholders, in the education sector, that the Federal Government will continue to meet its obligations and agreements with all unions.

Hope For Retirees As Nasarawa Sets Aside Special Funds To Pay Gratuity

Reprieve is coming the way of retirees in Nasarawa State, as the state government is setting aside funds meant for the payment of long awaited gratuity to retired civil servants in the state.

Nasarawa State Governor,  Engineer Abdullahi Sule disclosed this while being presented with the report of the committee on the implementation of promotions and salary arrears in the state public service, at a ceremony at the Government House, on Wednesday.

Engineer Sule while also disclosing that for the first time, Nasarawa State has benefited from the World Bank special package for States Fiscal Transparency, Accountability and Sustainability (SFTAS), giving to states that are transparent, accountable and follow the due process, said a percentage of the grant will be set aside to pay gratuity of retirees.

The Governor said he earlier made a commitment to the effect that if the money is made available, his administration will set aside a special amount for the payment of gratuity of retirees workers who participated and helped towards developing the state.

"Certain amount of the money from the World Bank, will go for gratuity and I will keep to that commitment. I will make sure that a certain percentage of this money goes straight to pay gratuity," he stated.

Speaking on the recommendations of the committee,  Engineer Sule expressed willingness to offset the outstanding August 2016 salary arrears, to deserving civil servants in the state, out of fairness, justice and accountability.

According to the Governor,  in order to be fair and just, there is need to pay outstanding August 2016 salary arrears to civil servants that were not paid as at when due, stressing however that the approval for the payment, will remain pending until another committee put in place to look into the issue of the new national minimum wage submits its report.

"I told you we are going to get a present from the World Bank. I'm happy to announce to you that just yesterday, we received the first tranche," the Governor said.

He added that even though his administration accepted to whatever that was agreed by the committee on implementation of promotions and salary arrears, there is however need to await the resolution of the committee on the new national minimum wage before final approval is given.

While expressing concern that only the issue of the new national minimum wage remain unresolved, out of the commitments he made to the people of the state while being inaugurated into office,  Engineer Sule appealed to members of the Committee on the New National Minimum Wage,  chaired by the state Deputy Governor,  Dr. Emmanuel Akabe, to expedite action and conclude its assignment.

The Governor used the opportunity of the event, to clear the air on the circumstances surrounding local government areas in the state.

He said at a time when it's no longer expedient for local government areas In the state to merely await monthly subvention from the Federal Government, his administration was surprised that some officials within the local government system were not happy that the state government is trying to save N600m for the councils.

Engineer Sule explained that what the committee set up by the state government to scrutinize financial activities at the local government level, did was to uncover that in spite of an embargo against employment placed in 2012, with the biodata of every civil servant documented, still the payroll of the councils rose from N1.1bn to N1.3bn, even with resignations, retirements and deaths.

"At the end of the day, it came out that some of the officials were not even interested  in the exercise, which will translate to those officials were more or less, benefiting from the system," he stated.

He further urged chairmen of local government areas in the state, to continue to think outside the box and not to solely depend on FAC or JAC, especially that Nasarawa State is blessed with great potentials.

Engineer Sule commended members of the committee on the implementation of promotions and salary arrears, for the wonderful job they undertook.

Earlier, Chairman of the committee, Chief Philip Dada, said the committee was not able to submit its report within the stated period because of systemic challenges encountered during the course of its assignment,  especially the absence of readily available data for use.

According to Chief Dada, the committee discovered the existence of one month salary arrears for the month of August 2016, while also indicating the financial implications of the outstanding salary arrears.

Supreme Court Ruling On Bayelsa Election: Litigants Not My Enemies - Gov. Diri

Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, has again extended a hand of fellowship  to all those that filed petitions in court against his election.

Governor Diri in his reaction to Wednesday's ruling of the Supreme Court, which dismissed the last batch of cases against him and his deputy, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, said the litigants were neither his enemies nor enemies of Bayelsa.

He said they only exercised their rights by going to court and that he did not consider the litigations as personal regardless of the fact that they were a distraction.

His Chief Press Srcretary, Mr. Daniel Alabrah, said in a statement that the dismissal of the petitions of the Alliance for Democracy (AD), Liberation Movement (LM) and Advanced Nigeria Democratic Party (ANDP) against the deputy governor and that of the Accord Party (AP) against Diri was the fifth time the governor and his deputy had won at the Supreme Court.

In putting a final seal on the governor as being duly elected, the apex court said the appeals lacked merit and therefore dismissed all four petitions.

Speaking to journalists after the judgement, Governor Diri said: "I have over the period leading to the Supreme Court ruling said as a state we do not need all of this distraction. We are one and the brotherhood should be paramount.

"After elections, particularly when a government has taken the oath of office, we expect everybody to support and bring their ideas on board for Bayelsa to grow and become prosperous. That is why we tagged our government the Prosperity Administration.

"So, today marks the end of all the litigations. If anybody wants to further appeal, maybe he can appeal to the court of the devil. But, constitutionally, I believe this is the end of all the litigations.

"Once again, I call on my brothers  that had gone on this appeal to join hands with the government of the day. And what should be uppermost on our mind should be the interest of Bayelsa and not individual and personal interest.

"Of course, it is their right to take their matter to the end. However, I call on my brothers on the other side, who are not my enemies but political adversaries, so to speak, to join hands with our government and ensure that we bring development and prosperity to our people."

The Bayelsa governor commended the Chief Justice of Nigeria and other justices of the Supreme Court for their professionalism and for again displaying that the court was the last hope of the common man by standing on the side of the rule of law.

He also urged the Bayelsa people not to despair due to the challenges of the time.

"The times are hard. We are in tough times in the face of COVID-19, which is still threatening, and the dwindling resources of our country and of our state.

"We are still believing God that has divinely put us in the position of leadership to also provide the divine resources for us to develop and prosper in Bayelsa and in Nigeria.

"So, my message to Bayelsans is that there is hope for us and prosperity is coming to Bayelsa. Nobody should despair.

"This is the time for us to bring our ideas to the table. This is the time for us to actually walk the talk and look at issues dispassionately  without sentiments and emotions, in order to bring development and prosperity to our state."
