Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje of
Kano State has stressed the need for increased community participation in the
state, in view of the vast challenges in the sector and the limitation of
resources at the disposal of the government.
According to him, “community
participation in education is a means to increase resources, ensure a more
cost-effective use of resources and improve accountability of schools to the
community they serve, thereby improving the quality of education”.
“More than ever before,
communities, individuals and groups must come together to save the sector of
education in Kano, going by the number of our children going to school, the
challenges of poor infrastructure and even facilities at all levels, from basic
to tertiary education”, he stated.
He explained that there are vital
areas in which communities can be involved in education, from sourcing funds
and renovating or constructing classrooms, to providing teaching and learning
aids as well as auxiliary facilities.
The Governor spoke during a
reception organized by Rano Education Promotion Committee in honour of Alh.
Auwalu Abdullahi Rano, who single handedly renovated Abubakar Ila Primary
School in Rano town, headquarters of the local government.
Dr. Ganduje stated his
administration was moved by the falling standard of education in the state, to
establish education promotion committees, to involve communities in managing
especially primary education.
He, therefore, praised Alh. Auwalu
Abdullahi Rano, who through A.A. Rano Foundation, renovated the public school
for the benefit of pupils whose parents are mostly peasants, urging other
wealthy individuals to emulate him.
In his address, the state Deputy
Governor and Commissioner for Education Science and Technology, Prof. Hafiz
Abubakar, emphasized on the need to involve communities in a broader range
of activities in a genuinely-participatory way, to give education in the state
a magnificent rebirth.
Also speaking, the Imam of Rano
Tsohon Gari Juma’at Mosque, Ustaz Dayyabu Umar Me Mai, focused on communal
spirit in Islam, quoting copious Islamic references, highlighting that
investing in education earns for the investor eternal reward.
Responding, Alh. Auwalu Abdullahi
Rano, thanked the community recognizing his modest effort, praying that Allah
will support him to do more for his people and for humanity in general.
