The United Young Professionals said
its attention has been drawn to a publication in Daily Independent titled “Police
Commission Set To Review ‘Lopsided’ Promotions”
In a press release signed by the
National Coordinator of the United Young Professionals, Adewole Kehinde, in
Abuja on Monday, he said that those frowning at some officers who were promoted
twice within one year need to get some facts.
“We want to bring the attention of
Police Service Commission and the general public to the case of DCP Jimoh
Moshood. It is on record that he has spent 18 years from ASP to ACP. He
spent 8 years on Superintendent (SP) rank while the General Promotion
Guidelines spelt out for the Police Service Commission, stipulated 3 years for
a promotion to take place, Adewole said.
Adewole further reiterated that the
Police Service Commission should be talking of promoting DCP Jimoh Moshood
instead of demotion, being agitated by some mischievous people.
“To set the record straight, the
promotion of ACP Jimoh Moshood, FPRO to Ag. DCP became necessary because of the
existing vacancy in the Force Public Relations Department for the rank of
Commissioner of Police.
“Furthermore, his promotion will
assist to bring him at par in rank to the National Public Relations Officers of
the under listed organisation that have equivalent of Commissioner of Police
and Deputy Commissioner of Police as their Public Relations Officers
- The Nigerian Army has Brigadier General as Director Public Relations;
- The Nigeria Navy – has Commodore as Director of Naval Information;
- The Nigeria Air Force – has Air Vice Marshal as its Director of Public Relations;
- The Nigerian Customs Service – has Deputy Comptroller as its Public Relations Officer
- The Nigerian Immigration Service – has Deputy Comptroller as its Public Relations Officer;
- The Nigerian Prison service – has Deputy Comptroller as its Spokesperson.
- Federal Road Safety Corps – has Corps Commander as its Spokesperson
- The Civil Defence has a Deputy Commandant as their Public Relations Officer
Adewole said that if really the General Promotion Guidelines spelt out for the Police Service Commission which states that it should take a minimum of three years for an officer between the ranks of ASP to ACP to be considered for another promotion, during which time he/she must have attended the relevant promotion course and passed the prescribed examination; we should be talking of Commissioner of Police for the Police PRO instead of acting Deputy Commissioner of Police.
“We hope the committee set up to
review recent promotion under the chairmanship of Justice Clara Ogundipe will
also consider those who are supposed to be above their present rank, by recommending
them for immediate promotion, the statement concluded.
