Women Arise Demands Fairer Treatment for Women As Nigerians Remember Alhaja Kudirat Abiola, 20 Years After





Those who die for others live forever. That is the position of the martyr of Democracy, Kudirat Abiola who died in the course of struggle for humanity and democratic governance in Nigeria on June 4th, 1996. 

20 years after, Nigerians remember the martyr and her strides.

Activists gathered at the gravesite of Alhaja Kudirat Abiola today to commemorate the 20th year since her assassination by State officials during the unfortunate military junta headed by General Sanni Abacha.

Organized by the Women Arise and Kudirat Initiative for Democracy (KIND), the remembrance procession included a wreathe laying activity at the gravesite of Alhaja Kudirat Abiola today.

Those who spoke at the event demanded an end to brutal killing of innocent citizens, fairer treatment for women in memory of Alhaja Kudirat and good governance in Nigeria 

Speakers at the wreathe laying procession included two sons of the Late Alhaja Kudirat Abiola; Mr. Jamiu and Abdul-Mumeen Abiola; President of Women Arise, Dr. Joe Okei-Odumakin; Head of Admin. at Kudirat Initiative for Democracy, Mr. Rasheed Owonifari; Chairman of NADECO, Admiral Ndubuisi Kanu; Executive Director of Gender and Development Action (GADA), Mrs. Ada Agina-Ude and prominent filmmaker, Tunde Kelani.

A documentary on the life of Alhaja Kudirat Abiola was screened by Tunde Kelani after the wreathe laying.
