A total number of 14,729 candidates have sat for the 2020/2021 Federal Teachers' Scheme FTS examinations, a programme of the Federal Government.
The examination which took place simultaneously on 16th Nov, in 74 JAMB approved Centers across the Federation is to assist states find teachers for rural schools.
Monitoring the conduct of examination in Abuja at the CBT centers of the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (Kogo & Bwari Centers), the Executive Secretary of the Universal Basic Education Commission, Dr Hamid Boboye, said the programme is to ensure teachers get adequate required trainings before their deployment.
Dr Bobboye disclosed that only 3700 candidates, 100 per state will be selected based on State Cut off marks for the programme.
According to him, "the budget provided for just 100persons per states, so we feel they deserve to be absorbed into the state"
He stated that Nigeria needs more teachers to attend to the over 42million pupils in Nigerian basic schools.
"As far as public schools are concerned, we have problem interns of numbers that can adequately meet the population that we have, with about 1.4million teachers in the system, we need more teachers to cater for the over 42million pupils we have"
The UBEC Executive Secretary called on States government to absorb the FTS teachers saying UBEC has expended resources in making sure they are trained within their immediate environments.
"Some states refuse to absorb such teachers and as such we urge them to do so, as an internship scheme, what happens latter depends on the state where they serve"
"After verification exercise, UBEC will then ascertain the authenticity of their certificate before training commences for them"
Over 350 thousand applicants applied for the Federal Teachers' Scheme across the 36 states of the Federation and the Federal Capital Territory.
UBEC has been conducting the FTS programme of the Federal government since 2016.
The exam took place on Monday 16th November, 2020.
