Katsina State School Of Nursing And Midwifery: Masari's Commendable Stride



Katsina School of Nursing and Midwifery predates Nigeria as a country. It was established in 1956, with the responsibility of training middle class health personnel in areas of Nursing, Midwifery, Post Basic nursing program among others.

Since its inception over 60 years ago, the school was on provisional accreditation to offer those courses.

On assumption of office in May, 2015, the school had the blessings of the Aminu Bello Masari's commitment in the Health Sector. The challenge was having renovated and upgraded the General Hospitals across the State aside equipping them with modern machines, the issue of personnel remained a daunting and traumatising challenge. What appeared to have answered the question is an institution that has trained this manpower; the Katsina School of Nursing and Midwifery.

This institution had experienced a total upgrade in structures, facilities and manpower, this culminated in increasing the number of instructors vis a vis the students as a result of securing a full accreditation.

The school is now able to admit 180 students per session as against the former capacity of 50 students per session.

Katsina Media and Publicity exclusively discovered that these 180 students are on the basis of 100 basic Nursing and Midwifery, 30 for refresher programme, 30 post Basic and 20 foreign students who are posted by the Council of Nursing, Midwifery and Medical Lab Science.

Some of the facilities the school now have includes: students’ learning classes, E-learning class with alternative energy for 24 hours use, internet facilities, Computer Library as well as Conventional Library, Standard Laboratory, Standard Hostels for both male and female, where as, the human resource improvement include, 28 tutors as against the initial only 8, 15 are first Degree holders in various disciplines, 8 masters degree holders and 5 PH.D holders.
